Matti Johannes Eskelinen

This is my personal web page for publishing information about my research. I have chosen to organize the page as a wiki, rather than a blog, because I wish to present notes and work in progress, and I usually have time to write refined articles only very rarely. For this purpose, an editable wiki is better than a blog. My wiki platform, WikkaWiki, offers RSS feeds for changes and comments. If you wish to follow my work on this wiki, subscribe to them.
I am a researcher and Ph.D. student at University of Jyväskylä in Jyväskylä, Finland.
For my Ph.D. Thesis I am researching computer vision techniques for augmented reality applications on mobile platforms. My target is to develop high-level computer vision methods to enable visual scene understanding in mobile applications. The resulting scene models should be sufficient for generating useful augmentations in real-world, unprepared environments. The methods should apply equally well to robotics, which is my other area of interest.
My scientific interests include computer vision, artificial intelligence, statistical inference, augmented reality, personal robotics, human-computer interfaces, and cognitive psychology. My long-term research ambition is artificial visual cognition.
I'm married and the father of two sons. My personal interests include sci-fi (Philip K. Dick, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Alastair Reynolds, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica), music (Jean Michel Jarre, Armin van Buuren, Muse, Coldplay), and philosophy.
